Brigham and Women’s Hospital – Shapiro Center for Cardiovascular Care
The new Carl J. and Ruth Shapiro Cardiovascular Center features the latest architecture and technologies – ensuring that patients have the access to the most innovative procedures and treatment options available. Its strong connectivity to the existing hospital building and campus is the culmination of thoughtful planning and responsive architectural articulation—striking a balance between public spaces, which invite gatherings and philanthropic events, and more intimate areas that offer a sense of warmth and comfort. The Center provides operating suites for cardiac and vascular surgery, diagnostic and treatment facilities, variable-acuity in-patient units, ambulatory care clinics, and a range of public amenities, including dining, conference and family centers. By consolidating cardiovascular services, the Center improves the patient experience via operational efficiencies and encouraging communication and collaboration among specialists. Lobby Patients enter the Shapiro Center either from the street level or second floor skywalk bridge from the main hospital building. To support a healing environment the lobby is surrounded by natural light, plants and comfortable lounge furniture. Out-Patient Waiting Rooms The out-patient rooms have ample space to accommodate soft seating and lounge furniture as well as places to connect to the outside world using the hospital’s computers. Colors and artwork were also used to create unique settings to relax and wait in. Patient rooms All patient rooms feature extensive natural light, a proven factor in accelerating patient recovery. Each room is 300square feet and designed for the comfort of patients, their families and ease of movement for staff in their care of the patient. All patient rooms are private. Family Waiting Rooms The Shapiro Center considers the needs of patients’ families and includes a variety of waiting areas, a resource center and education and consultation rooms to ensure their comfort and privacy. The family waiting rooms are designed with soft lounge furniture, warm woods, fabrics and colors and natural light.
Caregivers Stations When nurses and doctors are on the go, they need a quick touch down spot to check labs and other medical information. The spaces are strategically located along the corridors near the patient rooms. Doctor Offices and Conference Rooms When not seeing patients or conducting surgery, doctors need a place to do quiet work or collaborate with others. The doctor’s office provides a quiet escape to read, perform research, check lab results and meet with others one-on-one. The conference rooms, located on each floor of the Shapiro Center, provide a convenient place to connect and collaborate with a team of doctors on cases they are working on. The use of individual workstations, and content displayed from wide screen multimedia projectors allows them to access information to collaborate and make critical care decisions. Collaboration Center| Control Room This state-of-the-art Collaboration Center is comprised of a boardroom, breakout room and control room. The boardroom seats 68 people around a custom oval wood table (provided by others) and consists of a 12 cube video wall (provided by others), five 60” flat screens, multiple video cameras, 10 ceiling microphones combined with 20 cardioid condenser gooseneck microphones that are integrated into the boardroom table. The Polycom HD telepresence system enables collaboration with other healthcare partners, hospitals or world experts. The collaboration center is also used for executive board meetings, philanthropic events as well as to view content from the hospital network, breaking news during a crisis and live or archived recordings of cardiac procedures. The distributed audio system is augmented with Assisted Listening for the hearing impaired. The breakout Room is smaller than the boardroom but has similar capabilities of the boardroom. The control room is the center of operations for the collaboration center. Technicians monitor the rooms using two 46” flat panels and control the system using a customized 24” touch panel.
